X-O Manowar

X-O Manowar (2017) #1

Summary from Comixology: “Born under the oppressive thumb of the Roman Empire, Aric of Dacia learned warfare at an early age. It was amid such violence that he was abducted by an alien race. With it, he returned to Earth…only to find himself stranded in the modern day. But that was a lifetime ago.

“Now, far from home on a strange and primitive new world, Aric has begun a new life. Liberated from his past, he tends to his crops. Free from war. Free from violence. Free from the armor.

“But the machinery of death marches his way once again. Conscripted into an alien army and thrown into an unforgiving conflict, the fury inside him finds voice as he is forced to embrace the armor once more. With it, he will decimate armies, topple empires and incite interplanetary warfare as he rises from SOLDIER to GENERAL to EMPEROR to VISIGOTH. They wanted a weapon. He will give them war!”

4LN Advanced Comic Review – Bloodshot Reborn #14 (New Arc)

Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Mico Suayan
Publisher: Valiant Comics

Summary from Valiant Entertainment:

Stranded on a mysterious desert island, Bloodshot is running for his life! But as he tries to make sense of his surroundings, he’s quickly discovering that this is no ordinary tropical getaway… Surrounded by decommissioned relics of the same bloodstained project that created him – World War II Bloodshot, Cold War Bloodshot, Vietnam Bloodshot, and other antiquated experiments – Bloodshot is about to find out where Project Rising Spirit sends it old soldiers to die. Can this seasoned band of killers trust each other long enough to survive the threats that lie in the jungle around them…and unlock the secret at the heart of the island’s existence before they’re each permanently retired? And who or what is the sinister force called DEATHMATE that now hunts them at every turn?

This summer, superstar creators Jeff Lemire (Extraordinary X-Men) and Mico Suayan (BLOODSHOT REBORN) send Bloodshot screaming into his most action-packed adventure yet as “BLOODSHOT ISLAND” ups the ante for the Valiant Universe’s most formidable soldier!

This book has been on almost every Valiant fan’s radar since they announced it a while back.  They teased us with images of more Bloodshots (one looking like a mix between Bloodshot and Robert Downey Jr.’s character in Tropic Thunder) which was like throwing chum in the water for fans.  Needless to say there was a lot of hype leading up to this book.  For many people, that much hype can lead to unrealistic expectations and ultimately being let down by the very thing that you loved most….  Was that too much?  Anyway, worry not Jeff Lemire and Co. will not let you down.  This book is phenomenal.  What follows is a spoiler-free look at BLOODSHOT REBORN #14 “BLOODSHOT ISLAND.”

As you might have guess by the description above, this plot is reminiscent of The Most Dangerous Game… except exponentially more dangerous because there is a mysterious new character that shares a name with a particularly infamous crossover event from the 90’s, and she’s powerful enough to hunt multiple Bloodshots.

Yes, as shown in the previews, BLOODSHOT ISLAND is full of multiple Bloodshots that hail from multiple periods of conflict (Vietnam, Gulf War, etc), and they have their own canine side-kick appropriately named Bloodhound (before reading this issue, I was hoping that was the name of the dog… that or Bloodspot).  And yes, it is as awesome as it sounds.

Jeff Lemire is setting up a plot that is brilliant as it is terrifying.  This particular issue plays out like a science-fiction, horror film, with a some mind-blowing action sequences beautifully illustrated by the talented Mico Suayan.  His art is insanely good.  Every panel is packed with detail, and all of the character designs are perfect.  I was kind of worried because on the cover, the villain has ENORMOUS hands.  Luckily within these pages, her design is great, and seeing her in action is awe inspiring.  Mico also treates us to a two page splash where we get our first look at the Squad and it is is mesmerizing!

I was fortunate enough to read this book early, but I still can’t wait for Wednesday so I can see how it looks on the actual page.  For new readers, this is a good jumping, but be warned – Valiant is addicting.  BLOODSHOT REBORN #14 is a mind-bending 5 out of 5, and needs to be in your hands this Wednesday.

4LN Comic Review: Bloodshot Reborn #1

Series: Bloodshot Reborn
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Mico Suayan and David Baron
Publisher: Valiant

Summary from Comixology:

From New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (THE VALIANT, Green Arrow) and red-hot rising star Mico Suayan (HARBINGER, Moon Knight), VALIANT NEXT delivers an all-new ongoing series for Valiant’s most unrelenting hero!

Bloodshot’s nanites made him a nearly unstoppable killing machine. His enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and healing made him the perfect weapon, and he served his masters at Project Rising Spirit – a private contractor trafficking in violence – very well.

Now, Bloodshot is a shadow of his former self. He lives in self imposed exile, reeling from the consequences of his past life and the recent events that nearly drove him mad. But when a rash of shootings by gunmen who appear to look just like Bloodshot begin, his guilt will send him on a mission to stop the killers, even if it means diving headlong into the violence that nearly destroyed him.

When Valiant first announced this book a while back, I wasn’t all that excited.  It’s not that I didn’t love Valiant (if you’ve been reading this website you should know that I am a pretty big Valiant fan), it’s that I didn’t really know much about Bloodshot.  I head read a lot of the other Valiant titles, but Bloodshot hadn’t been one of them (I had a LOT to catch up on).  After reading Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt’s The Valiant, and catching up on the first Bloodshot run thanks to the marvelous Scribd app, I had a new appreciation for the nanite-powered, killing machine.  The Valiant laid out an awesome groundwork for who the new Bloodshot could be — a hero — and I was really excited to pick this up when it hit the stands on April 15, 2015.

All of the action in this book occurred in either flashbacks or hallucinations, and that is absolutely alright with me.  This issue focuses on a recently de-powered Bloodshot (aka Ray) who is dealing with the tragedy that occurred at the end of The Valiant, and coming to terms with the life he led for so long.  Lemire does an awesome job showing us Ray’s struggle to cope with his past while working as a nobody in a small Colorado town.  The story is mostly told through inner-dialogue with very few actual conversations, and it totally works. After all of the stylized violence that Bloodshot is known for in his earlier series it’s almost jolting seeing him as a normal guy working as a handyman, but I loved it.

Suayan’s realistic art style plays well with Lemire’s thoughtful story.  A lot of the panels showing Bloodshot/Ray dealing with his inner demons, along with the small town setting, reminded me of True Detective.  He really captures Ray’s despair and struggle to figure out who he is in light of the previous events.  The last panel, when it looks like he’s about to get back in the game, is also really cool and very reminiscent of the Punisher.

Also, if you haven’t read a single book in the Valiant Universe, you should have no problem following along thanks to the succinct recap found in the opening pages.

There aren’t really any lows in particular.  I will say that some might find the tragedy that occurs near the end of the book a little too similar to another tragedy in Colorado, but it didn’t seem distasteful to me.  It also might seem a bit slow to some people, but I think that’s where this book gets it’s charm.

Final Say-

Bloodshot Reborn was a strong start to what is shaping up to be a great addition to the Valiant line.  Lemire was able to take a killing machine, make him vulnerable and depressed, and still tell a poignant story about coming to terms with oneself in the face of tragic events.  This book earns a strong 5 out of 5, and it makes me excited to see where the Valiant Universe is headed.  Head on out to your local comic shop and pick you up a copy!

4LN’s Most Anticipated Comics of 2015!

As 2014 draws to a close, and we reflect on the great comics we’ve enjoyed this year, let’s remember that next year is right around the corner and holds some pretty exciting new series for us to indulge in! Here’s what we’re most looking forward to!

Bill – Gwen Stacey: Spider-Gwen.

Edge of Spider-Verse Vol 1 2
Edge of Spider-Verse #2 was one of the BEST comics I read in 2014. I really wasn’t expecting much from the event, but that issue two blew my mind. And when the news about Spider-Gwen getting her own series was announced I was super excited. The creative team behind the book, writer Jason Latour, artist Robbi Rodriguez, and colorist Rico Renzi are going to do a hell of a job one one of my favorite female characters, Gwen Stacey. I’m really excited for a new take on a character that I really love. And, I think she’s in great hands. We have already seen some emotional moments between Spider-Gwen and Earth 616 Peter Parker, so I’m interested to see how things go for the two of them after Spider-Verse. Be sure to pick up Spider-Gwen when it hits shelves in February! (She also plays in an all female punk band, do they want me to fall in love with her?!?!)

Cameron – Star Wars Comics from Marvel

My most anticipated comic of 2015 also happens to be the most anticipated movie of 2015 – Star Wars by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday.

Star Wars
I am really excited to see what Marvel does with the property now that they have it back from Dark Horse, and it’s shaping up to be an awesome book.  Star Wars will be set directly after the events of Star Wars IV A New Hope and will detail what actually happened following the mass genocide via farmboy (aka the destruction of the Death Star) and go from there.  In the movie there is about a three year gap between A New Hope and Empire, so there is a lot of room to tell a good story there.  Speaking of telling a good story, the fact that Jason Aaron is involved is probably what I am most excited about.  He is a terrific writer and the fact he is involved makes me feel like Marvel will be taking this property seriously.  Star Wars #1 will hit shelves on January 14, 2015.

Stephen – Howard the Duck, and Valiant Comics

There are a handful of comic-industry things I’m looking forward to in the new year, but I’ll just narrow down to 2 specific things. The first is Marvel’s new Howard the Duck series, by Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones.

Now, I’m not like a huge, old school fan of Howard or anything, but I’ve read enough of his stuff to know that the 80’s movie about him isn’t even close to being an accurate interpretation of the character. I also really loved the Marvel Zombies Destroy mini-series from a couple of years ago that had him teaming up with Dum Dum Dugan. Probably the main reason I’m so excited about it is that Chip Zdarsky is writing it. Chip is one funny motherf@#er, and if you don’t believe me, then go follow him on Twitter. He is also the co-creator and artist for Sex Criminals; an Image Comics series that all intercourse-experienced adults should be reading. I am confident that Howard’s sarcasm and the tongue-in-cheek nature of his series are in capable, and culpable, hands with Chip at the helm.

The other thing I’m stoked about for 2105 is the new line of books from Valiant Comics. I’d say I’m most excited about Ninjak and Bloodshot: Reborn. Valiant Comics have been KILLING IT lately on their series’ and if the first issue of The Valiant is any indication, we’re in for some kick-ass books from this publisher in 2015.

Are you excited about any of these new series? Is there something else in the comics world you’re pumped to see in 2015? Let us know in the comments below!
